چکیده

We designed four datasets for the purpose of benchmarking local causal discovery algorithms. These include two “re-simulated” datasets obtained from artificially generated data from models trained with real data and two datasets including real variables intermixed with artificial variables (called probes). There is no time dependency in the samples. We chose applications in marketing, pharmacology and bio-medicine spanning a high diversity of types of distributions. The datasets were used in two challenges in 2008 organized for the WCCI and NIPS conferences. A detailed technical report on the dataset design is available (Guyon et al., 2009). The website of the challenges remains open for post-challenge submissions (http://clopinet.com/causality).

Pot-luck challenge: Fact Sheet for the PROMO Dataset

The PROMO dataset proposes the task to identify which promotions affect sales. Artificial data about 1000 promotion variables and 100 product sales is provided. The goal is to predict a 1000 × 100 boolean influence matrix, indicating for each (i, j) element whether the ith promotion has a causal influence of the sales of the jth product. Data is provided as time series, with a daily value for e...

Distinguishing between cause and effect

We describe eight data sets that together formed the CauseEffectPairs task in the Causality Challenge #2: Pot-Luck competition. Each set consists of a sample of a pair of statistically dependent random variables. One variable is known to cause the other one, but this information was hidden from the participants; the task was to identify which of the two variables was the cause and which one the...

The Slow Learner

a thing ascertainment is. The basis of proper provision for special educational treatment is to be found in adequate ascertainment, and adequate ascertainment does not exist under any local education authority at present. About half of those who are believed to be present in the population are found and ascertained by pot-luck only. Dr. Cleugh touches upon the practical difficulties of classes ...

The Problem of Moral Luck: An Argument Against its Epistemic Reduction

Whom I call ‘epistemic reductionists’ in this article are critics of the notion of ‘moral luck’ that maintain that all supposed cases of moral luck are illusory; they are in fact cases of what I describe as a special form of epistemic luck, the only difference lying in what we get to know about someone, rather than in what (s)he deserves in terms of praise or blame. I argue that epistemic reduc...

Luck and Good Fortune in the Eudemian Ethics

Recently there has been some discussion of Aristotle's treatment of good fortune (£\m>x;{a) in the penultimate chapter of the Eudemian Ethics. I There are two claims about this chapter I wish to challenge. One maintains that the use of the word tUXll (usually translated as 'luck' or 'chance') in the EE is 'quite different' from Aristotle's theoretical discussion of luck, found in the Physics (W...
